Saturday 6 September: Castel de Marvau
We had a very enjoyable evening last night eating simple food shared with two couples from the Netherlands. Of course they spoke very good English and it was good to share stories of travels and politics.
It’s a hot day and Vitor brings us our bread. Accompanied with love and hugs. I’m not sure Simon is coping so well with the Campscape campness! Anyway we get a lift up to Marvao and we explore the walls of the beautiful fortified city perched on the top of the hill. It is stunning with 360 views and breathtaking scenery. The town is whitewashed with cobbled streets and the fortress itself very impressive. We have a coffee before walking back to the campscape which takes a couple of hours. Initially descending steeply we then follow ancient tracks through farmland and deserted buildings occasionally stopping to eat figs and grapes from the roadside. Back at base we cool off in the pool and relax before drinks and nibbles. Tuna Niscoise Salad for supper looking at the floodlit castle above us.
