Thursday 11 September: Praia do Farol

We decide we can’t face another long, dusty and bone shaking cycle to Malhao so we cycle just 10 minutes through the town to the mouth of the River Mira. It’s low tide so quite a lot of rocky outcrops and sandbanks as the river meets the sea. We find a sheltered spot and while away a few hours. We swim in the river/sea and are amazed at the strong current. Luckily the swimming area is roped off so we can’t drift too far. We have a late lunch at A Choupana, a rustic restaurant perched above the beach with sea views. We have grilled sardines and mackerel washed down with some local white! Not bad for a Thursday. Back at the beach we have to move a few times to avoid the incoming tide and some noisy Americans. We have not seen or heard any English here which seems strange. Back to base for tea and showers and a quiet evening in.
