Thursday 4 September: Segovia

It’s quite chilly when we wake up and we are putting on previously discarded layers to eat breakfast. Mid morning we head off into Segovia on the bus again. This time feeling like pros. It’s still very busy but we’re pleased we saw the aqueduct in evening sunlight last night. We explore the impressive and enormous gothic cathedral with its arches and ornate ceilings which took 200 years to build, then the episcopal palace which is mainly filled with Catholic treasures so our tour is swift! After a coffee and a custard tart we wander the street trying to avert our eyes from advertisements for suckling pig! The Alcazar castle is very Disneyesque although we gather it was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle. It’s all a replica so its position is probably more impressive than the building itself. We visit a bustling tapas bar for a glass of wine and some mediocre tortilla but the atmosphere feels exciting! Back to base as the sun is out and it’s now warm so a swim and relaxation by the pool. Tuna Pasta for supper. No mention of pigs!
