Tuesday 9 September: to Vila Nova de Milfontes

We pack up and endure our last amorous hugs from Vitor before heading off. It’s certainly been an unusual experience. Very remote and beautiful scenery but the site could be better maintained and cleaned up in our opinion. We stop en route at a rather mediocre supermarket and don’t feel very inspired. We also phone en route to book our favourite restaurant from last year only to find it fully booked for the next 3 nights. We’re a bit despondent but find the campsite at Milfontes fairly empty and we set up opposite where we were last year as we’d envied the evening sun. It’s pretty windy but nice sunshine. After lunch we wander into town to get our bearings and buy a mat to protect the van from all the sand on the pitch. When we return to our horror our pitch is surrounded by a commune of friends with vans and tents and…. Children! We decide to move to a quieter spot which proves stressful! We’ve managed to book supper at Restaurant Alento and it’s humming. I have a delicious tuna carpaccio and cod, and Simon has mussels and grouper stew washed down with some very good Alentejo white wine. Back to base. It’s still very windy but it’s forecast to settle.
