Wednesday 3 September: to Segovia
My nausea passes and thankfully I have a good night. We have a leisurely start and our drive is only 1hr40 to Segovia. We stop at a supermarket to restock and then pitch up and have lunch seeking shade under the awning. We spend the afternoon cooling off in the pool and reading before getting the bus into Segovia for the evening. It’s only a few kilometres. The Roman aqueduct is incredible looking like an enormous comb plunged into Segovia and built with not a drop of mortar to hold together more than 20,000 uneven granite blocks. It looks impressive in the evening sunshine and the streets are humming. We wander for a while unable to find a table for a drink until finally we find a spot and have a Tinto de Verano, a local type of Sangria. Then to Casa Duque, an atmospheric and traditional tavern dating from the 1890s. The speciality of the region is Cochinillo asado, roasted suckling pig. I’m afraid we do partake and it is pretty delicious although it feels like a once in a lifetime experience that we won’t want to do again! Back to base on the bus, in the dark. A late night for us.
